I do not think it matters for one's credibility whether one uses a GMail
account. I would be wary condemning people only because of that; if you
have an Android-powered mobile phone, you have little choice but to have a
GMail account. Sites like StackOverflow even can use GMail accounts for
SSO.

Using Google Groups *in combination* with the rest of what you mentioned
does matter.
