Oracle on NFS

We are running Linux on ESXi VMware with Oracle on NFS, would Direct NFS still help us

Help you with what? What is on NFS? Oracle software? Data files, log
files and control file? If $ORACLE_BASE is on NFS, direct NFS would not
help you at all.
If, on the other hand, only data files are on NFS mounts, Oracle claims
that it is faster to use direct NFS than regular, kernel based NFS. I
haven't done any benchmarks to that effect, but I don't think results
would be very different. Also, I am not sure if Direct NFS can beat a
full blown NFS4 client, with caching enabled.
Other than that, if your virtual machine is small and is not running on a
highly optimized hardware, Oracle is likely to be much, much slower than
on the hardware box. If your VMWare is running on Linux, you can use
"chrt" command to set up real time scheduling priority, which will make
it much faster.
